Sarah Sherburne, Program Manager for the New England Venture Capital Association and champion behind The Tech Generation, kicked off the event asking, “It’s your first week at an internship... what are some of the things a new intern can do to make a good first impression?”
The panelists took turns providing their insights from their experiences as interns and managing interns:
- Show up on time! In startups, most employees won’t arrive right on time, but that shouldn’t stop you from arriving on time or early! It shows dedication and reliability
- Ask as many questions as you can your first week or two - the earlier the better
- Get to know other people in the office - say hi! Introduce yourself to people who aren’t on your team
The conversation moved from understanding company culture, to building your LinkedIn profile and challenging yourself outside of your day to day tasks. The audience of interns propelled the conversation forward eager to learn from the panelists. Of all the advice and words of wisdom that was shared, the three most memorable pieces of advice are below.
“Don’t be afraid to challenge and push yourself.” - Nick Dougherty
“Your opinion matters, there is a reason you were hired.” - Trish Fontanilla
“Your internship is part of your body of work. Make sure your body of work is as strong as it can be.” - Michael Gaiss
