The day was dreamt up out of an original workshop series to be run over the course of the semester. Its goal was to expose students to new, applicable skills, for the workplace. After much white boarding and discussion, we decided to condense it all into one day. This semester’s Spring Fling included a keynote (or morning rabble rouser) presentation from Nicole Fichera, General Manager of District Hall, four workshops by General Assembly, a “buff and polish” session with recruiting firm The Bowdoin Group and then speed dating with local tech companies (Price Intelligently, PillPack, VerbalCare, LearnLux, Actifio, Grapevine Logic & Mealtime).
The event drew a diverse set of students with a 50/50 Graduate and Undergraduate split and students from over 10 different countries the group brought a unique perspective and list of experiences to the table. Overall, attendees enjoyed the event, whether it was the keynote, workshops or speed dating, everyone had something positive to say.
“I've been to a few events like this through my POSSE scholarship and this has been one of the most well done I've attended. The students I met were all very motivated and interesting so on that level the company was great. I also really enjoyed the speed dating portion. It was so helpful to have the time to talk to innovators in the area and hear about the challenges they face and what they're looking for in a team member.” Lindsey Cohen, Boston University Senior
"Spring Fling was an awesome kickoff to the TechGen 2.0! I discovered my passion for product management through the General Assembly workshops, got to network with awesome students and learned more about some really neat and innovate companies in the Boston area! I can't wait for the next event!" Jonathan Zinger, Babson College
As for the Speed Dating session, students had between 10-15 minutes to meet with each company, pick their brains, ask questions about their products and meet the founders and employees (all of which are hiring on the TechGen platform for their summer internships).
“Spring Fling event was a great way to meet young talent. The fact that each student went out of their way to show up to an event on a Saturday morning shows that they are committed to finding an opportunity for the summer. Because they showed up and met the people who will be doing the hiring, they have a better chance of being put on top of the pile and knowing if there will be a good fit for them in the company.” Rebecca Liebman, Founder of LearnLux
All in all, our first Spring Fling was a success! With 65 students, 7 companies, 4 workshops and lots of networking, all of the attendees rang in their weekend in a great way. We look forward to seeing what transpires as companies post positions on the platform and students apply! If you're a company looking to hire an intern, sign up here.
