But what happens when it happens to you? There are a lot of different traits that make bosses difficult. Some are overly demanding, some treat you like you’re worthless, others will ignore you and not give you any work. No matter the situation, there are ways of coping with these types of people and making sure you survive your internship. Below are some tips that can help:
Have a conversation with your boss: Have a discussion with him/her about what’s expected of you, what you can do to be the best intern possible and have the most impact in the time that you’re on the job. Often times, a tough boss won’t realize (s)he is giving you too much work and a conversation can remedy all of that.
Ask for feedback, often: The more you ask for feedback in the ways you can be better, the more your boss will respect your work ethic. It will also start to show your human side. If you appear to just be the intern with no name and no life outside of work, you’re more likely to be handed an insurmountable amount of work.
At the end of the day, you may just have boss who is tough no matter what you do. Luckily, you may find that a tough boss, no matter how miserable you are, will help toughen you up and prepare you for the rest of your life working with difficult people. Not a bad lesson to learn at an early point in your career!
